In conversations with colleagues, we repeatedly encounter a certain skepticism: "Why should we specialize further within orthopedics – isn't the field alone sufficient?" This question is understandable, but it overlooks a crucial development in modern medicine: the continuous growth of knowledge and the associated need for focus.
Other medical specialties have long since taken this path. Take internal medicine as an example: In the past, people simply referred to themselves as "internists." Today, this title is hardly conceivable without additional suffixes. Cardiologists, nephrologists, or gastroenterologists – they all specialize in a single organ system. And no one would seriously question the wisdom of this development. The reason for this is clear: medical knowledge is growing at a rapid pace. It is simply no longer possible to stay equally up-to-date in all areas.
This development has long since arrived in orthopedics, too. The demands on diagnostics and therapy have increased significantly. Surgical techniques are becoming increasingly precise, treatment methods increasingly sophisticated – many things that were considered almost impossible just a few years ago are now medical standards. Anyone who aspires to provide the best possible care to their patients must keep pace with this development.
The idea of being an all-rounder as an orthopedic surgeon and able to operate at the cutting edge in every field is unrealistic today. Nevertheless, one still encounters colleagues who consider themselves generalists – raising the question of whether this is always in the best interest of the patient.
We decided to take a different path early on. As early as 2006, we recognized the growing complexity of shoulder diagnostics and therapy as a future-oriented approach and consistently specialized our practice in diseases of the shoulder joint. Since then, time, energy, and financial resources have been channeled specifically into this area: into continuing education, state-of-the-art diagnostic technology such as high-resolution ultrasound and digital X-rays, and into specialized surgical instruments.
Today we can say with conviction: Our practice is a center for the holistic diagnosis and treatment of shoulder disorders – with sound expertise, state-of-the-art technology and the commitment to offer every patient the best possible care.
